How many days should you spend in Morro de São Paulo? (Plus New Year and Carnival)

Updated: October 2026

Short answer: 4 or 5 nights is ideal: enough for the beaches, the Volta à Ilha and Gamboa without rushing. With a week you can take it slow, and with 8 to 10 days it's worth adding Boipeba. For New Year and Carnival, book months ahead.

Why count nights, not days?

Getting here from Salvador takes between 3 hours (catamaran + pier) and half a day; getting back, the same. With 2 nights, almost a whole day goes on transfers. That's why we don't recommend a day trip from Salvador: if you only have one day, choose a closer island, like Ilha dos Frades.

How many nights for your trip?

NightsFor whomWhat fits
2Long weekendVillage, Second Beach, one sunset
3–4Comfortable minimumBeaches 1 to 4, Volta à Ilha, Gamboa
5–7Relaxed paceAll of the above + Garapuá, a day off
8–10Island-hopping5 in Morro + 3–5 in Boipeba

2-night itinerary

  • Day 1: arrival, walk up to the village, sunset at the lighthouse or the fort.
  • Day 2: Second Beach in the morning; Gamboa or the zipline in the afternoon.
  • Day 3: free morning and back on the midday catamaran.

4-night itinerary

  • Day 1: arrival and a walk around the village.
  • Day 2: walk from First to Fourth Beach, with swims.
  • Day 3: Volta à Ilha (pick a day with an early low tide).
  • Day 4: Gamboa at low tide, zipline and a night out on Second Beach.
  • Day 5: departure.

7-night itinerary

Add: a full day on Fourth or Fifth Beach, Garapuá by 4x4, diving at Caitá island, a day with no plans and a long dinner in the village.

What's New Year like in Morro?

It's the biggest date of the year. The Brazilian custom is to dress in white; people gather on Second Beach for the midnight fireworks, and there are ticketed parties at various clubs and guesthouses; the programme is announced each year around November. Good to know:

  • Guesthouses fill up months ahead.
  • Many places require a minimum number of nights.
  • Prices go up a lot, including at beach bars and on transfers.
  • Buy your return catamaran early: 1 and 2 January sell out.

What's Carnival like?

In 2027 Carnival falls on 8 and 9 February (Shrove Tuesday: 9 Feb). In Morro it's smaller and more relaxed than Salvador's: parties in the village and on the beach, and neighbourhood blocos in Gamboa. If you want a party, it's a great time; if you want calm, avoid it.

How do you escape the holiday crowds?

Stay on Third or Fourth Beach, or in Gamboa, and save Second Beach for a few nights out.
