How do you get to Morro de São Paulo from Salvador, and how much does it cost?
Updated: October 2026
Short answer: Most people take the direct catamaran from Salvador's ferry terminal: about 2h20 to 2h30 and R$152.51 one way (R$138.71 back). If you get seasick, the semi-overland route (boat to Itaparica + road + short speedboat) takes about 3h30 and avoids open sea. The small plane takes about 25 minutes and costs from R$500 per leg.
Where is Morro, and why can't you drive there?
Morro de São Paulo sits at the northern tip of Tinharé Island, in the municipality of Cairu, about 64 km (34 nautical miles) from Salvador by sea. Private cars don't circulate on the island, so the last stretch is always by boat or small plane. Morro has no international airport: international flights land in Salvador (SSA).
What are the options and how much does each cost?
| Option | Duration | Price per person (2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct catamaran | 2h20 – 2h30 | R$152.51 out / R$138.71 back | The simplest trip |
| Semi-overland (boat to Itaparica + road + speedboat from Bom Jardim) | 3h20 – 3h40 | From R$145 per leg via agency | Anyone prone to seasickness |
| DIY (ferry + bus + speedboat from Valença) | 5 to 6 h depending on connections | Ferry R$7.20 (R$9.50 weekends) + bus + speedboat R$45–50 | Backpackers with time |
| Small plane Salvador → Morro | ~25 min | From R$500; average ~R$750 per leg | Short on time |
What time does the catamaran leave?
Published 2026 schedule (may change with season and sea conditions):
| Direction | Departures |
|---|---|
| Salvador → Morro | 9:00, 10:30 and 14:30 (extra 8:30 departure in high season) |
| Morro → Salvador | 11:30, 13:30 and 15:00 (extra 14:30 in high season) |
Boarding is at the Terminal Turístico Náutico da Bahia (Av. França, Comércio), behind the Mercado Modelo. Arrive 30 minutes early: the catamaran leaves on time. The last one leaves Salvador at 14:30; if your flight lands later, stay the night in Salvador or take the semi-overland route or the plane.
Mind your return flight: Biotur recommends leaving at least 6 hours between departing Morro and your flight, because in bad weather the Port Authority can suspend the catamaran and the trip switches to semi-overland.
What should I choose if I get seasick?
The catamaran crosses open sea and gets choppy on windy days. The semi-overland route crosses the bay to Itaparica, continues about 110 km on the BA-001 road to the Bom Jardim pier (Valença) and ends with a speedboat of about 15 minutes. It takes an hour longer but has almost no open sea. If you still choose the catamaran: take your medication before boarding, sit in the middle and watch the horizon.
How do you do it yourself, on a budget?
- Ferry from São Joaquim to Bom Despacho (Itaparica): ~1 hour, R$7.20 Monday to Friday and R$9.50 on weekends and holidays (AGERBA fare in force since March 2026).
- Bus or van from Bom Despacho to Valença (about 110 km on the BA-001); check times and prices at the Bom Despacho terminal.
- Speedboat from the Valença terminal: about 40 minutes and R$45–50; the slow boat costs about R$25 but takes 1h30 or more.
It works if you have a full day and don't mind waiting.
What if I'm driving?
Drive to Valença or the Bom Jardim pier, leave the car in a paid parking lot and continue by speedboat (from Bom Jardim it's about 15 minutes and R$25–35).
What's the small plane like?
The scheduled route is flown by Abaeté with a 9-seat Cessna Caravan, from Salvador airport to Morro's airstrip (near Third Beach). It takes about 23–25 minutes and the view is spectacular. Prices: from R$500 on promotion, around R$750 on average and over R$1,200 on peak dates. The baggage allowance is small: check it when you book.
What happens when you arrive at the pier?
- TUPA: when you disembark you show or pay the R$70 per person fee (see the TUPA article).
- Porters: they wheelbarrow your luggage to your guesthouse for about R$15–30 per bag depending on size and distance. Agree on the price first. If you'd rather have someone waiting for you, we offer a pier welcome on request (extra charge).
- The hill: there's a short, steep climb from the pier to the village. Wear comfortable shoes.
Tips from people who live here
- On Brazilian holidays and long weekends the catamaran sells out: buy both ways in advance.
- Bring a light jacket: the catamaran's air conditioning is strong.
- Save the TUPA QR code as a screenshot: the signal at the pier is patchy.
