Garapuá from Morro de São Paulo: how to get there and what to do
Updated: October 27, 2026
Short answer: Garapuá is a fishing village in the south of Tinharé Island, about 14 km from Morro: a calm bay, an almost empty beach and natural pools that appear at low tide. The easiest way is the 4x4 across the island, from R$ 130 per person; by sea, the Volta à Ilha stops at its pools (but not at the village). Pick a low-tide day.

What is Garapuá and why go?
Like Morro, Garapuá is on Tinharé Island, in the municipality of Cairu. It's a small fishing village on a horseshoe bay sheltered from the swell, so the water is calm and shallow near the shore. No shopping street or loud music, just a few guesthouses and fish shacks: old-school Bahia, set to the rhythm of the fishing boats.
It's best known for its natural pools: offshore reefs that are uncovered at low tide, forming clear pools where you swim among fish. Few visitors stay on the beach, so you often feel you have the bay to yourself.
How to get to Garapuá from Morro
| Option | What you see | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Garapuá by 4x4 | The village, the beach and the pools (tide permitting) | From R$ 130 per person |
| Volta à Ilha (boat) | Garapuá's offshore pools, then Moreré, Boipeba and Cairu | From R$ 350 per person |
| Quad bike or buggy | With a guide or driver | From R$ 705 per vehicle |
By 4x4 overland. You cross the island on the dirt road, behind Morro's beaches, to the village. It's the only way to really enjoy Garapuá: lunch facing the bay, a swim, a walk on the beach and, if the tide allows, a small boat out to the pools from the village.
By boat on the Volta à Ilha. The island boat tour makes its first swim stop at Garapuá's offshore pools, then continues to Moreré, Boipeba, the Rio do Inferno and Cairu. You see the pools, but you don't land at the village. More in our Volta à Ilha article.
The tide: when to go for the pools
The pools only exist at low tide: at high tide the reefs are covered and Garapuá is "just" a lovely calm beach. The lowest tides (spring tides) fall around the new and full moon.
- Check the official Brazilian Navy tide tables (Centro de Hidrografia da Marinha) for your dates.
- Pick a day when low tide falls in late morning or midday, while you're there.
- Message us before booking: we'll tell you which day matches the tide best.
Weather-wise, the dry season runs roughly from September to March; April to June are the rainiest months. More in best time to visit.
What to do and what to bring
- The natural pools at low tide, by small boat from the village: swimming and snorkeling.
- A fish or seafood lunch at a shack facing the bay.
- A swim in the bay, calm and shallow: great with kids.
- A walk along the beach and through the fishing village.
Bring: swimsuit and towel, sunscreen (reef-friendly if possible), hat, water, mask and snorkel if you have them, water shoes for the reef, a dry bag for your phone and some cash for lunch and the boat, since there isn't always signal for card payments. On the reef, don't step on coral or feed the fish.
