Salvador to Boipeba transfer: every way to reach the island
Updated: October 27, 2026
Short answer: Boipeba is a car-free island, so the last leg is always by boat. From Salvador, the fastest option is the direct speedboat from the ferry terminal (about 2 hours, one departure a day in late morning). By road, via Itaparica Island and Valença, allow 5 to 6 hours with connections. If you're also spending a few days in Morro de São Paulo, you can chain them: Salvador → Morro, then 4x4 and boat to Boipeba (about 1 h 10).

The direct speedboat
A fast boat runs daily from the Terminal Turístico Náutico da Bahia, behind Mercado Modelo, to Boipeba's terminal: it leaves Salvador at 11:30 and arrives around 13:30; the other way, it leaves Boipeba at 9:00. Each passenger may bring one 23 kg suitcase and one carry-on, and extra departures are added for New Year. It's a sea crossing: if you get seasick, the road is more comfortable.
By road, via Valença
- Ferry from São Joaquim to Bom Despacho on Itaparica Island: about 1 hour. Ferries run hourly during the day; foot passengers can't book, so arrive early.
- Bus from Bom Despacho to Valença (Cidade Sol and Águia Branca): about 2 hours. Ask the driver to drop you as close as possible to the boat terminal: Valença's bus station is further away.
- Speedboat from Valença to Boipeba: about 1 h 30 (a bit more by catamaran), with several departures from late morning into the afternoon; check weekend times. The ride follows the mangroves of the Rio do Inferno, a beautiful final stretch.
It's the cheapest route, but connections aren't coordinated: leave early so you don't miss the last boat.
By car, via Torrinhas
Torrinhas, on the mainland, is the closest pier to Boipeba: about 30 minutes by speedboat, chartered on the spot. From Salvador it's roughly a 5-hour drive, either via the BR-324 and BR-101 or via the ferry and the BA-001. There are car parks in Torrinhas.
Via Morro de São Paulo
To see both islands, go to Morro first (see catamaran or semi-overland), then continue overland: the 4x4 Morro → Boipeba transfer crosses Tinharé Island by 4x4 (about 1 hour), then the Rio do Inferno by boat (5 to 10 minutes) to Boca da Barra. There's also the transfer to Boipeba. All the details in Boipeba from Morro.
Our organized transfer
Our Salvador → Boipeba transfer picks you up at the airport or the Salvador ferry terminal and takes you all the way to Boipeba: bay crossing, coastal road, then boat to the island. Allow about 5 h 30. To head back: the Boipeba → Salvador transfer.
Practical tips
- Pack light: there are no cars in Boipeba, so luggage goes by wheelbarrow or tractor.
- If you're flying in, don't count on the last connection: between ferry, bus and boat, delays add up.
