Salvador to Morro de São Paulo transfer: catamaran or semi-overland?

Updated: October 27, 2026

Short answer: There are two main ways from Salvador to Morro de São Paulo. The direct catamaran takes 2 to 2.5 hours from the ferry terminal in downtown Salvador, but it crosses open sea. The semi-overland route combines a bay crossing, about 1 h 40 by road and a short speedboat: allow 3 h 20 to 4 h 30, with no open sea. If you get seasick or are coming straight from the airport, semi-overland is usually the easier choice.

What's the catamaran like?

You board at the Terminal Turístico Náutico da Bahia on Avenida da França, in the Comércio district right behind Mercado Modelo, and land at the First Beach pier, in the middle of the village. The crossing takes 2 to 2.5 hours depending on sea conditions. Catamarans leave on time, so be there at least 30 minutes early. Schedules change with the season: check yours in the table below.

Good to know: when the sea is rough, the Port Authority can suspend departures, and operators then send passengers on the semi-overland route.

What's the semi-overland route like?

  1. All Saints Bay: a boat from the ferry terminal to Mar Grande on Itaparica Island (around 40 to 45 minutes). It's a public line, so there may be a queue. When tide or sea don't allow it, you cross by car ferry from São Joaquim to Bom Despacho (about 1 hour).
  2. The road: an air-conditioned van or minibus, about 1 h 40 to 1 h 50 on the BA-001 to the Bom Jardim pier near Valença.
  3. The speedboat: a short ride to Morro's pier.

With waiting times, allow 3 h 20 to 4 h 30 from Salvador's terminal, and about an hour more if you're picked up at the airport.

Which one should you choose?

  • You get seasick, or travel with small children or older people: semi-overland.
  • You land in Salvador and want to head straight to Morro: semi-overland with airport pickup. For the catamaran you first need to get to the terminal downtown.
  • You want the shortest trip and don't mind the sea: the catamaran.
  • Your flight lands in the afternoon: the last catamaran leaves Salvador in the early afternoon. Plan a night in Salvador or check the semi-overland and airport times.

How to avoid seasickness on the catamaran

Take motion-sickness medicine half an hour before boarding (ask your pharmacist), sit near a window and keep your eyes on the horizon rather than your phone. If you know you're very sensitive, don't force it: that's exactly what the semi-overland route is for.

On arrival: the TUPA fee

When you arrive in Morro, every visitor pays the TUPA, a municipal fee collected by the town of Cairu. You can pay in advance on the official site tupadigital.com.br or the TUPA Cairu app, or on arrival at the kiosks and booths at the village entrance. It's valid for 7 days after check-in and children under 5 are exempt. It's not included in the catamaran or the semi-overland transfer. Details in our TUPA article.

Going back to Salvador

The same options run the other way: the Morro → Salvador catamaran or the Morro → Salvador sea-and-land transfer, which drops you at the airport or in town. If you're flying the same day, leave plenty of margin: in rough seas the catamaran may be replaced by the longer semi-overland route.
